Battery replacement or service – how to take care of your watch properly
A watch is an investment – both in time and style. Whether you have an automatic men's watch or a quartz-powered model, it needs regular care to keep ticking along properly. Here we go over when you should have your battery replaced or serviced, and why it's important for the longevity of your watch.
When do you need to change the battery?
For quartz-powered watches (battery-powered watches), the battery usually lasts between 2–3 years, depending on the model and features.
Signs that the battery needs to be replaced:
- The second hand jumps in steps of several seconds
- The hands stop completely.
- Digital display starts to fade
Waiting too long to replace the battery can lead to leakage from old batteries, which can damage the movement. We always recommend that you have your battery replaced by a watchmaker or authorized service partner.
When is it time for service?
Even mechanical watches need care. The oil in the movement dries out over time, and small particles can affect the precision.
A good rule of thumb:
- Automatic watches : service every 4–6 years
- Quartz movement : service every 6–8 years (or in case of problems)
Regular service ensures that your watch retains its value, accuracy and function for many years.
